Cookson Cup
Llandudno Junction F. C. 1 Bethesda A.F.C. 6
A lovely autumns day down at the flyover for our tough Cookson Cup
game against Bethesda. As early as the 4th minute a cross by
Bethesda into the Junction goal area resulted in Darren Gowans
Bethesda’s no. 11 heading the ball into the net 1 – 0 to Bethesda, a
bad start for the Junction. In the 9th minute a good break by
Junction and a shot by John Blundell who was slightly off balance
when he took the shot hitting the ball over the crossbar. Then two
minutes later Steve Priestly had a shot hitting the post which
somehow managed to roll along the goal line & out for a goal kick.
In the 17th minute a free kick to Junction taken by Paul Lloyd a
cracking shot hitting the crossbar with the Bethesda goalkeeper
nowhere. Junction continued to pressurise Bethesda and in the 30th
minute a good strike by Daryl Jones just going over the crossbar.
Against the run of play Bethesda broke & crossed the ball into the
Junction goal area with Richard Owen Bethesda’s no. 10 having a free
header into goal 2 – 0 to Bethesda. This was a shock to Junction
after having a good spell. Junction where now under pressure and in
the 40th minute a cross again by Bethesda resulted in their no. 8
Richard Owen having another free header 3 – 0 to Bethesda. It wasn’t
over there in the 45th minute a shot by Richard Owen took a nasty
deflection of Junction’s Tony Priestly going over the head of Joey
Welsh 4 – 0 to Bethesda, this was all Junction needed going into the
break.
Half Time – Llandudno Junction 0 – Bethesda 4
What could Junction do in this 2nd half, in the 49th minute a free
kick to Junction was taken by Paul Lloyd with the Bethesda
goalkeeper saving & palming the ball out only for Gary John to be
denied the follow on. Then finally in the 50th minute a break for
the Junction another free kick this time taken by Dwyfor Which took
a deflection off a Bethesda player goal to Junction4 – 1 to
Bethesda.
In the 59th minute Junction took of John Paul and brought on Paul Cassidy.
Bethesda continued to pressure Junction and in the 72nd minute a
simple ball over the top with the Junction defenders stopping and no
offside given saw Gareth Davies Bethesda’s no. 9 round Joey to score
5 – 1 to Bethesda, this was a shock to Llandudno Junction who,
hadn’t played that bad. A substitution by Llandudno Junction in the
73rd minute saw Tom Roberts on for Paul Lloyd then manager Gary John
Jones in the 76th minute being replaced by Calum Vernon. In the
final minute a break by Bethesda had Darren Gowans shooting and
scoring 6 – 1 to Bethesda & this is how this Cookson Cup ended.
