Saturday October 13th
Welsh Alliance League Glan Conwy 5-0 Junction
Following the win against Pwllheli we travelled the short distance
to Glan Conwy knowing that it would be tough against a very good
young team. The first half was a scrappy affair with neither side
really dominating as we saw more than our fair share of high balls
on the “postage stamp”
First junction chance was in the 7th minute, a shot from Steve
Priestley that was easily taken by Aaron Peel in the Glan Conwy
goal, three minutes later Dwyfor Williams was cautioned for a
“handbag” incident. The game was then held up following a collision
between Tom Roberts and Mr E Williams the assistant referee who was
floored and stayed down. As the home bench looked on it was left to
Casper the Cockney to assist the elderly assistant who resumed his
duties to the sound of applause from the spectators. Shortly after
play resumed Glan Conwy were unlucky not to have taken the lead,
with the Junction defenders standing off, Gavin Roberts had all the
time in the world to shoot with his excellent effort glancing the
crossbar.
Glan Conwy took the lead in the 32nd minute, a mistake by Darrel
Jones saw the Junction defender robbed of the ball by Lee Hughes who
beat the approaching Rob Jones to make it 1-0.
Towards the end of the half, Neil Picton suffered a painful injury
and was replaced by Ben Thomas who had originally turned up to watch
but was told to go home for his boots.
Following the drama of the incident involving the assistant referee
we had our bit of comedy as the diminutive Ross Howcroft Jones
decided to go in for a shoulder challenge on Rob Jones and
hilariously bounced off the Junction keeper.
Half time: 1-0
Any Junction hopes that they could get back into the game were
shattered as Glan Conwy turned the screw early on in the second
half, Ashley Smith having a shot blocked in the 55th minute but the
home fans did not have to wait long for their second. A free kick
well taken by Shaun Shannon into the top corner of the net. This
brought about the now customary Junction collapse that saw a lack of
discipline with the Junction players arguing amongst themselves. In
the 62nd minute a 50 yd punt landed at the feet of Ashley Smith who
once again saw Rob Jones pull off a fine save only for Lewis Moroney
to pick up the ball from the rebound and score with his first touch
of the ball. One minute later it was 4-0 as Ashley beat the Junction
offside calls to score. Four minutes later the home team were gifted
number 5, Darrel Jones skying the ball goal bound, Rob Jones pulled
off a cracking one handed save only for the ball to be picked up by
Howcroft Jones to make it 5-0.
To compound matters late on in the game John Blundell was sent off
for two senseless yellow cards.
Final Score 5-0
John Toshack said after the Wales vs Cyprus game that it was “a
debacle, a shocking performance and that Wales didn’t compete and
they were second best in everything”, well I can say the same about
Junction and add a couple to that – humiliating and embarrassing,
another game that saw the defence crumble, conceding 4 goals in the
space of 11 minutes – Rhyl, Brymbo & Bethesda all over again. A very
bad day for Junction FC.
