Saturday October6th
Welsh Alliance League
Junction 2-1 Pwllheli
Following the disappointing results in the FAW Trophy and Cookson
Cup it was back to league action against Pwllheli. It was a
beautiful afternoon at the flyover that brought out a large crowd.
First chance of the game fell to Pwllheli’s Dave Farr after only 90
secs, his effort saved thanks to Rob Jones’ outstretched leg. The
first real chance for Junction came in the 4th minute with a header
from John Paul that was easily collected by Carwyn Thompson in the
Pwllheli goal. Three minutes later the visitors were on the attack
and gained a corner following a poor attempted back pass by Neil
Picton, Rob Jones once again saved the day for Junction. It
was a half with chances falling to both sides but it was Junction
that took the lead in the 24th minute, good build up play saw a near
perfect cross from Tony Priestley that was met Callum Vernon for a
good headed goal. The visitors nearly levelled in the 43rd minute –
a shot rebounded off the cross bar with Dave Farr foiled when his
goal bound effort was cleared off the line.
Half time: 1-0
The worst possible start to the half for Junction that saw the
defence go to sleep following an injury to Neil Picton, this allowed
the ball to be crossed into the box with Neil Jones on hand to slot
home – a goal that was predicted by Bootsy during the build up play.
Junction played their part in an end to end second half, a corner in
the 50th was cleared for another corner with the Pwllheli defence
working overtime to clear the ball three times, incl one off the
line. Another chance in the 58th minute with Callum just beaten to
the ball by the Pwllheli keeper, the loose ball out to Darrel Jones
who shot just wide.
In the 68th Pwllheli danger man Farr had another good chance, his
headed effort just over the bar, Junction also continued to have
chances with a good shot from Callum palmed away by the Pwllheli
keeper in the 75th minute. One minute later John Paul came off and
was replaced by Gary John and what an inspired substitution this
turned out to be. Almost immediately following a throw in there was
a goalmouth scramble with the ball falling to none other than the
Junction player manager who blasted the ball home to put Junction
2-1 in the lead, a lead that they managed to hold on to.
Final Score 2-1
A vital win, well deserved with a battling performance from the
Junction. Let’s hope that this will go some way to silencing the
critics. Unbeaten at home in the league!
